DIY: dockstar and 2 toslink spdif outs

lower left is cm102 based. larger module on right (on clear plastic carrier) is cm108. both are cmedia brand chips with spdif digital audio outputs that are easily ‘hackable’.

connect to standard 3.3v toslink sender blocks ($2 or less) and you have a nice bit-perfect digital audio usb device.

background is the seagate dockstar out of its plastic box. a small usb thumbdrive (green) holds the running linux o/s.

the application is a networked music player (mpd). it works very well and has a nice functional web interface to control it.

the usb audio boards were cheap, in the range of $5 to $25.

and yes, before you say it, I really do enjoy using ribbon cable and heat-shrink tubing 😉
